An In-depth Review of the Reliance Hassock Portable Lightweight Self-Contained Toilet
If you are in need of a cheap, light, easy-to-use portable toilet, – the Hassock Portable Lightweight Self-Contained Toilet is a contender. At less than $50, it ranks high in the affordable department. We were impressed by the simplicity and thought put behind the design of this one!
Table of Contents
You are probably wondering what could be impressive about a portable toilet aren’t you? Well, this one is designed with convenience in mind. It has a solid seat, removable inner bucket, separately contained toilet paper storage, and a lid to keep everything in one place.
The Hassock, as a bucket type porta potty, is on the small side and is slightly larger than a 5-gallon bucket. Its size lends itself perfect for use when camping and boating, but is also small enough to fit in your car for long car rides if you have someone who needs frequent stops or small children.
The design of the seat is very helpful in preventing splashing when using. No one wants to deal with splashing, so it’s a very handy feature. Keep in mind, while the picture may give the impression that it is cushioned – it’s not. Made from a thick rigid plastic, it’s on the harder side when compared to others.
Handles are molded into the sides of the Hassock portable toilet so you can easily move it whenever and wherever you need it.
The lid slides on easily, yet feels secure. If it were to tip over, the lid would not come off, but you would have a bit of a mess because any liquid could get up to the seat level inside the unit. The bottom of the unit is perfectly flat so that tipping won’t be a common problem.
How It Works
The Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet is incredibly easy to use! The inner container is where you’ll put the liner. Then you’ll put the inner container back into the outer container, put the grey seat on the outer bucket and over the edge of the inner bucket. Drop in about 4-6 inches of clumping cat litter and top it off with the toilet paper holder and lid. No rocket science degree needed!
The frequency of emptying this porta potty will depend on how frequently it’s being used and how many people are using it. How full you are comfortable letting it gets is determined by how heavy you are willing to let the bag get. For an average single user, you could make it up to about three days before needing to empty the bag.
You can use this portable toilet without liners if you want to, but I highly recommend using a liner that makes clean up a simple process.
If you are tent camping, you can dedicate a tent strictly for porta potty use, and this unit would work great for that purpose. With its small size and odor protecting seal, it could just as easily be housed in your main camping tent if you don’t have the luxury of owning two tents.
Optional Items That Are Useful with the Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet
I talked about liners earlier. You can purchase some from the same company that makes this porta potty; generic bags found at your local sporting goods store, or you can use a sturdy trash bag with a drawstring. I highly recommend that you use good quality liners no matter which way you go to avoid tearing and a mess!
– Clumping Cat Litter
Clumping cat litter helps to absorb the moisture waste as well as to reduce odor issues. You don’t need to buy an expensive name brand litter; any will do. It’s also a good idea to store your cat litter in a sealed container, so it doesn’t get wet.
– Toilet Paper
I’m pretty sure that one’s a given. While you may prefer 2-ply toilet paper at home, using 1-ply or biodegradable toilet paper is better for any portable toilet because it breaks down faster.
Things to Keep In Mind
If you are a tall person, say over 6 feet, this will be very low to the ground.
– Clean Up
Make sure that you take proper care of your portable toilet after a trip as well as during the trip. Once you are back home and putting everything away, give it a good soap water scrubbing Be sure to store it in a dry place that doesn’t get direct sunlight. The Hassock Portable Toilet is made out of plastic, and if it stays damp or sits in direct sunlight, you will end up rotting it out, and on the lookout for a replacement.
This porta potty is small enough to fit in the back seat of a mid-sized sedan, so if you have someone with health concerns or children, you can set it in the backseat to give them privacy if needed. Obviously, it would work well for minivans or SUVs as well.
Overall, we think the Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet is a win! It’s reasonably priced, works well in an emergency, very handy in a camping situation, and is simple to clean up.
