Features to consider when buying a pool
When you’re shopping for a pool, there are a few things to consider in order to choose the best one for your family.
- How much space do you have for a pool? Besides the pool itself, you’ll need to leave 2 to 3 feet of space on each side for access and maintenance.
- While you consider the space you have, remember that the ground needs to be level.
- How deep would you like the water to be? (Most above ground pools are under 5 feet deep.)
- Does the pool come with a heater and a filtration system, or will you buy those separately?
- Does the package include other accessories like a ladder and a cover? A cover can cut cleaning and heating costs by half.
- Also consider the additional expense of maintaining a pool or hot tub, like paying for water and electricity, or new filter cartridges.
A heater makes the pool much more comfortable to use in the early mornings, in the evenings, and at the beginning and end of pool season, but it does run up the cost of maintaining a pool.
A cover keeps out debris and protects the pool on cold nights. If you have small children, get a sturdy cover or put up a fence to keep your children out of the pool when it’s not swim time.
A filter is important to keep the pool sanitary. If you buy a filter separately, be careful to choose one with an appropriate amount of power to avoid damaging the pool liner. Sand filters are low maintenance.
Now let’s take a look at the best above ground pools for your home. We’ll start with a quick overview of the best features of each one.
The top above-ground pools
We’ll start with a large round pool that is ready to use in only an hour.
Intex 18ft X 48in Metal Frame Pool Set with Filter Pump, Ladder, Ground Cloth & Pool Cover
Intex pools are generally very easy to assemble. This 18-foot diameter round pool sets up in 60 minutes. One person can assemble and fill it without help—Intex included an instructional DVD that shows how to do it. The pool is 4-feet deep and holds 6,423 gallons of water.
Let’s consider the size for a moment. Intex says it can hold 8 people or more. Owners say it’s great for kids to swim in, while adults find it a little small. But they enjoy it for cooling off and doing low-impact exercises.
Although it’s so easy to assemble, it’s tough. The puncture-resistant laminated PVC walls of the pool are supported by a rust-resistant powder-coated steel frame and a band around the sidewall. If there is a problem, the pool is covered by a warranty for 30 days. Generally, aobe ground pool liners last for a few years.
The cartridge filter system has dual suction outlets and it pumps 1500 gallons per hour. It’s protected by a GFCI circuit that shuts down if the electrical current comes in contact with water.
When it’s time to empty the pool in the fall, there is a drain plug that connects to a standard garden hose so you can direct the water away from your yard.
The pool comes with the filter, a ladder, a ground cloth to place underneath it, a cover for the top of the pool, and an instructional DVD.
Intex PureSpa Jet & Bubble Deluxe Portable Hot Tub, Round, 77″, Onyx Black
Wouldn’t it be great to have your own inflatable hot tub? Intex’s Pure Spa Jet & Bubble Deluxe makes it possible for you to enjoy a Jacuzzi at an affordable price. It’s large enough to seat 4 adults.
Inside the soft structured walls is the Intex spa system with 120 bubble jets and 4 massage jets to relax sore muscles. The hot tub is 28 inches deep and 77 inches in diameter, or almost 6-1/2-feet wide. It holds 210 gallons of water.
The heating system maintains the temperature between 68 and 104 degrees F, depending on your preference. The dual-cartridge filtration Intex saltwater system treats hard water with salt to make it softer and filter out impurities. The tub also comes with a floating pool chlorine dispenser if you prefer to use that.
Unlike inflatable pools with saggy seating, the Intex hot tub is built from 3-ply laminated material reinforced with fibers provide firm seating and strong sidewalls. It comes with a thermal ground cloth and an insulated locking cover to keep heat in, cutting down the cost of running it. See how it looks and works up close in this video.
If you want to transport the spa to another location or put it away, it comes with a carrying bag. Should there be a problem, the spa has a 30-day warranty.
Intex 24-Foot by 12-Foot by 52-Inch Rectangular Ultra Frame Pool
If you have the room for a larger above ground pool, this one from Intex is almost as long as those iconic double-decker buses in London. It’s also more than 4 feet deep. Adults can swim in this pool or enjoy a round of mini-volleyball with a team. Kids can enjoy a party with all their friends. You may want to invest in a pool vacuum because a skimmer might not be enough.
The Ultra Frame Pool is made from sturdy triple-laminate walls supported by a reinforcing band. The walls are held up by strong powder-coated steel frames that don’t need extra tools to assemble. Simply lay the ground cloth down, fit the frame together, place the ladder, and fill the pool with water. Intex says setup only takes 60 minutes.
Instead of a cartridge filtration system like the other two Intex pools we reviewed above, this one has a sand filter pump. The pump has a flow rate of 21000 gallons per hour, which is great for this pool since it holds 8403 gallons of water.
This sand filter system works well to keep the water clear, but it’s very low maintenance. It only needs replacement of the sand every 5 years. There are no other filters to replace or clean. It has dual suction outlets for improved water circulation, plus a GFCI switch to shut it down if water reaches the electrical parts so there’s no pool shock.
At the end of the summer, it’s easy to drain the pool as you can connect a standard garden hose to direct the water away from your yard and house. Pool setup and maintenance is explained in the DVD included in the box.
iPool D Set (iPool I with Deluxe Filter Pump and Heater Combination)
If you had a back injury or problems with your legs or feet, regular exercise in a gym might not be possible. That where this small pool is ideal. You can get a low-impact workout at home using the built-in resistance tether. Take a look at this video and you’ll see how it works.
The pool is built from five layers of vinyl-coated polyester similar to that used in river rafts. The frame is zinc-coated galvanized steel that resists corrosion. It measures 7 feet wide by 10 feet long and it’s 45 inches deep. You only need a space that measures 9 by 12 feet for it, so it would fit in a basement or a garage. The only thing to note is that, if it’s placed indoors, the floor needs to be able to support one ton of weight.
The iPool D Set comes with its own filter system and pool heater. The filter processes 2500 gallons per hour, so it cleans the whole pool more than once an hour. The 5.5kW heater keeps the water at a comfortable temperature.
In order to use the pool for exercise, strap into the Velcro harness and swim. You can perform movements like butterfly and freestyle strokes as if you were in a large pool swimming laps, but you don’t have the hassle of going to a rec center or gym.
Once you open the boxes, it takes two people about half an hour to set up the iPool. It comes with a ladder, a floor mat, and a repair kit. It’s covered by a one-year warranty.
Heritage TA 301552GP-DXP Taos Complete Above Ground Pool, 30-Feet x 15-Feet x 52-Inch
The Heritage Taos Pool’s oval shape measures 30 feet long by 15 feet wide, and it’s over 4 feet deep. It’s so sturdy that it comes with a 25-year warranty from the manufacturer.
The structure is built from a galvanized steel wall with a 7-inch wide ledge encircling the top. The metal parts are coated with zinc to resist rusting. The inner liner is made from all-weather vinyl with lap-welded seams and a pretty swirl print bottom. It’s clearly built to last.
The heavy-duty ladder has a handy feature to limit accidental drownings and unsupervised swimming—it flips up so it can’t be used to enter the pool. But that’s not the only great feature.
This pool has a sand filter system with a 1Hp motor to keep the pool water clean and clear. On a pool of this size, it’s nice to have a sand filter since it’s very low maintenance.
Although the package includes a step-by-step installation video plus free customer support, several owners report that they preferred to have the pool professionally installed because of its size. This ensures that the ground is properly leveled, too.
Accessories for your above ground pool
If you forget to cover the pool, here is an easy-to use skimmer to clear off leaves, twigs, and insects.
Swimline Hydro Tools 8039 Professional Heavy Duty Leaf Skimmer
But since the skimmer doesn’t come with a pole, you’ll need this handle too:
Hydro Tools 8351 6- to 12-Foot Adjustable Blue Anodized Step-Up Telescopic Pool Pole
It’s lightweight and strong, and it expands up to 12 feet long.
Swimline 8040 Professional Heavy Duty Deep-Bag Pool Rake
The pool rake head fits on the same telescoping pole. It’s handy if you’ve dropped your keys into the pool, but don’t want to get wet getting them out.
Intex Deluxe Pool Maintentance Kit for Above Ground Pools
While you can’t use a Kreepy Krauly vacuum in an above ground pool, you can get everything you need in this Intex pool vacuum and maintenance kit. It saves you money by not buying the parts separately, plus you can use your pool’s filter as suction for the vacuum head.
Having your own pool is an achievable goal. We hope you found the perfect above ground pool to make this summer the best yet!
