How Do I Plan For An Emergency?

Emergency can happen at any time, and when we least expect it. Earthquake, hurricane, tornado, Forest fire, flash flood. All of these situations are very dangerous and unpredictable for any of us. That is why it is so important to know what to do in case, but mostly, what to prepare if we are forced to leave our home.
The first step is required to have a 1-3 day disaster emergency kit. If your family includes other members, make sure each member has its own emergency kit. You must definitely have a backpack or a bag, to carry prep kit elements with you.

The first step: building an earthquake kit

Your preparation kit must include:

  • Water: 1 gallon per person per day;
  • Non-perishable food: well-preserved and easy to prepare (canned foods, snak, dry crackers, etc.);
  • The manual can be opened;
  • Flashlight;
  • Mobile phone with charger
  • Mobile radio (for important communications);
  • Spare batteries for your tools (especially your flashlight and radio);
  • First aid kit: in special bandages, strips, hydrogen peroxide (for sterilization);
  • Copies of personal documents: proof of address, behavior / tenancy, insurance policy, proof of identity);
  • Copy of special medication documentation (prescription);
  • Medicine;
  • Block and pen notes;
  • Personal hygiene items (soap and towels);
  • Insulation sheet (to protect you from cold and low temperatures);
  • Cash;
  • A map of the surrounding areas (in the case of floods and earthquakes, not predicting that the locations look the same);
  • Lighters (at least 2);
  • Versatile tools;
  • At least 1 change clothes;

You may also need:

  • Baby supplies: bottles, baby food and nappies;
  • Games for children;
  • Comfortable items;
  • Pets: collars, leashes, food ID, bowls and pills.

The second step: Making an emergency plan

Preparing a disaster emergency kit is not enough, meet with your family and prepare for emergencies. Develop an emergency plan that identifies a standard behavior to have in every emergency and finds out what to do in case you are separated.
Define responsibilities for each member of your family and in case some of you need special help, learn how and who can help. Alternatively, choose an out-of-area contact in the event of an emergency.
Choose a place or places to meet: near your home; in a particular place in the neighborhood and maybe more.

Third step: Be informed!

It seems normal, but in the event of a disaster, it is not easy to follow the news.
First, you may have no electricity to charge your smartphone or watch TV. Or you may not be able to connect to the internet, because the lines are not working or because too many people are using the internet at the same time.
That is why a portable radio with a backup battery (as in the list above) can be very useful in such cases.

Final Verdict

Disasters are often unexpected. After the disaster, local officials and relief workers will be present at the scene, but they will not be able to reach everyone immediately. Help may take a few hours, or it may take a few days.
So your family will respond best by preparing for a disaster before it happens with the best earthquake kit. Make sure you choose the right type and match the characteristics of the family.

Camping at the beautiful Wokas Lake Forestry campground with our friends. The water was crystal clear and the lake was refreshing! Even Fani, our dog, who is NOT a water dog, found herself submerged from time to time. The last picture is our overnight in the grand metropolis of Campbell River, looking out at Quadra Island...our next destination. #escapetrailers
